Are You a Perfectionist?

You can’t see it, but my hand is totally raised on this one! It's something I am working on for myself and can totally resonate with.

Perfectionism is something I’m hearing more and more women talk about in my practice, so I know it’s important to shed light on this topic.

If you’re living with high-functioning anxiety specifically, this is one to be aware of!

In our pursuit of happiness and success, perfectionism is an invisible burden we carry that can often be destructive and overwhelming.

Let’s explore some of its signs:

Unrealistic expectations of yourself and others – We're setting impossible standards for ourselves and constantly feel like we need to do more and achieve more. All the while, leaving little room for self care, compassion, and patience.

Fear of coming up short and disappointing others – This leads to self criticism and feelings of self doubt, frustration, and guilt, which make it hard for us to try new things and take risks that can help us reach our personal and professional goals.

Procrastination – When we fear that we meet our own expectations or standards, we may put things off.

Overworking and burnout – We tend to push ourselves without prioritizing self care, setting boundaries, or taking breaks.

And the last one may surprise you….Difficulties delegating tasks or trusting others. We bear the weight of it all because we worry that others won’t live up to our high standards.

Ok, so with all of that..what's the answer to perfectionism?

As a therapist, I firmly believe in the power of kindness and compassion for ourselves, mindfulness, and, as hard as it may seem, embracing our imperfections.

And what I find is that most of us tend to ignore our strength and our value, and really underestimate the power of celebrating successes and small victories. These are just a few of the concepts to really focus on if you’re struggling with perfectionism.
