“But I Hate Change!”

Have you ever said to this to yourself?!

Change can be challenging for most people, but for those of us with high-functioning anxiety it can feel like an uphill battle! As a licensed therapist who has walked the path of anxiety myself, I wanted to share my personal story and offer some insights on how to embrace change while living with high-functioning anxiety.

A few years ago, I found myself facing a significant change in my life—moving to a new city and state for the first time ever. It was so exciting but deep down, my anxiety was already hard at work - overthinking, worried about all of the uncertainties, and dreaming up the worst case scenarios. The prospect of leaving behind familiar faces, routines, and environments filled me with dread.

I realized that my anxiety was a well-practiced conductor of the "what-ifs." What if I didn't make any friends in my new city? What if my business fails? What if I hate it there? How will we adjust? Do I have what it takes to do this? These worries haunted my every step! 😟😟

Does this sound all too familiar to you too? Are you or have you gone through significant change in your life and struggled to cope?! What change are you going through now?

As I look back on this time with a healthy dose of perspective, I realize it ended up being one of the best times for me to embrace change, which has made a HUGE positive impact on my anxiety. So today, I’m sharing what I’ve learned with you!

Acknowledge Your Feelings: It's crucial to recognize that anxiety is a natural response to change. It's okay to feel anxious; it doesn't make you any less capable or strong.

Seek Support: Don't hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or a therapist like myself. Sharing your worries with someone you trust can be incredibly relieving and comforting. This will gave you the space and guidance you need!

See It As Opportunity: Instead of seeing change as overwhelming or burdensome, take it as it comes and see this change as an opportunity to mess up, grow and evolve. Focus on one step or one thing at a time, and celebrate your achievements, however small they may be,  along the way.

Challenge Negative Thoughts: High-functioning anxiety often thrives on irrational thoughts. Challenge these thoughts by asking yourself, "Is this really likely to happen? What evidence supports this fear?"

Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Understand that change is challenging for everyone, and you're doing your best. Practice self-compassion, as you would to a dear friend.

Embracing change with high-functioning anxiety is an ongoing journey, and it's normal to have setbacks along the way. But remember, you are stronger and more resilient than you realize. 🤗🤗

I hope my personal story and these strategies resonate with you. Change can be a catalyst for positive transformation!!
